Last night I had the pleasure of spending some quality time with my MiMi.  It’s been a while since we hung out, and a night at the theatre was a great idea.  We headed to Little Five Points to attend the Horizon Theatre’s production of A Cool Drink of Water.

Hopes and dreams brew as a family searches for their “cool drink a water” in this provocative and contemporary twist on A Raisin in the Sun. Newly “retired” from his good job, Walt is dreaming new schemes. Wife Ruthie’s nest is almost empty, but wannabe rapper son Trane won’t move out and get a job. And Benita and Asa move back from Africa with baggage and secrets. Is that Mama Lee haunting the house? A powerful and funny update to a classic story.

We enjoyed the show immensely.  It helps if you are familiar with A Raisin in the Sun, but even if you are not you will certainly find yourself enjoying this show.  Although the underlying tone of the play is dramatic, it is filled with lots of laughs.  Knee slapping laughs.  The playwright is also the star and he does a wonderful job.  His facial expressions alone will have you laughing.  The rest of the cast does a great job as well.  My favorite character was Ruthie.  She’s hysterical.  I also enjoyed Asa because, well, he is quite easy on the eyes!

I really liked the way they did the set.  The entire play is set in the house and it was easy to transition from room to room without being distracted.  I even appreciated attention to props like the skyy vodka and the french toast.

I’m not going to lie to you, our tickets were absolutely gratis.  However, this play is totally worth the price of a ticket.  It’s probably one of the best non-musicals I have seen in a couple of years.  I would definitely make an effort to check this out.

A Cool Drink of Water at The Horizon Theatre runs July 10 through August 23.

The people in reality tv land must really be struggling to come up with new programming.  There’s a new show on Ox.y.gen that has me scratching my head and changing the channel as quickly as I can get the remote in my hot little hands.

Dance

Dance Your Azz Off is like Big.gest Loser meets Dan.cing with the St.ars.  Except, well, there aren’t any stars.  So really it’s just a bunch of obese (not just overweight) people dancing with what I guess are professional dancers.  At the end of each dance routine they weigh themselves to see how much they have lost.  To be perfectly honest, I’ve only seen about six minutes of this show in total.  I watched a couple of minutes of auditions, a couple of minutes of rehearsal and a couple of minutes of competition.  I could stomach no more.

This show is awful.

I don’t know if I am offended by the morbidly obese contestants jiggling around in skimpy outfits that show WAY too much skin, or just the overall tone of the show.  The whole things just seems wrong.  Like they are exploiting them and making fun of them like “look ma, a fat girl doing the splits!”

Wrong.

I won’t be watching this again.  I only watched enough of it to write this post.

Have you watched this show?  Will you?

Today I got up fairly early to head to the Anytown Foruth of July Parade. My grandmother, aunts and little cousin were going, and I wanted to have a little taste of Americana too.  The last time I actually attended a parade was about twenty years ago when I was actually IN the parade.  That’s right, for one year, I was an Anytownette.

I remember donning my little black skirt, white polo, pom-pons and my “white girls”.  For those of you who do not know what “white girls” are, they are the plain white canvas shoes.  Keds is known for making them, but we always purchased ours for $7 at wally world.  Ironically, I was the only Black girl on the team, and it was my white counterparts that affectioned named the sneakers after themselves.

The parade started at 10am, but because Anytown is so small, my grandmother and I didn’t leave the house untl about 9:50.  We parked at the local library walked two blocks to the start of the parade.

Every Anytown has a Main Street

As far as parades go, this one was highly entertaining.  Not because of the spectacular floats, clowns and acrobats.  But because the parade featured a bunch of old ladies sitting on the back of a flatbad with stoic looks on their faces, a Bengals firetruck and a trio of waste management trucks.  WTF?!?!?

Here are a few of the more laughable moments from the parade:

Smile, wave, it's a parade!

I think this was supposed to be a highlight of the day.

You all know how much I love to play games.  Wait, you didn’t know?  Oh, well I do.  I love games.  I think it all started in my youth.  I come from a family of game players.  Even still, when we get together we are playing cards or pulling out a board game.  It’s my favorite part of getting together at the holidays.  Well, that and the endless pouring of cocktails.  What, are you new?

Last year I was aquainted with my DS Lite, thanks to my good friends at Nintendo.  I could begin taking my gaming addiction with me.  Sometimes I take it to work or the pool, and it always come with me when I travel.

I also enjoy playing games online.  No, I’m not talking about Mafia Wars.  I’m finally bored to tears with that.  But I do like to play poker online, and then there is always Bingo.  Who doesn’t think bingo is a fun game?

What are your favorite games?  Online, electronic or otherwise?

kards

I have recently discovered the reality wonder that is Keeping with the Kardashians.  When I first heard of this show I scoffed.  Who wants to watch a reality show about a bunch of rich brats?  Who do?  I do!  I freakin love this show!

I truly like these girls.  Well, Kim, not so much.  But Khloe and Kourtney are cool.  We could hang.  Even the mom amuses me.  Sure they are all overly concerned with their looks and materials possessions, but they are highly entertaining.  With a capital E and that rhymes with B and that stands for bougie.  My kinda girls!

The Mummy

The only thing I don’t like about the show is the stepdad, Bruce Jenner.  At first he just creeped me out.  His skin is pulled so far back he looked like a wax figure of himself.  And in case you didn’t know, that is not a good thing.  Then I saw an episode that made me dislike him altogether.  Khloe was asked to do a PETA ad where she bared all.  She came to her stepdad worried and nervous about doing the ad and instead of giving her encouraging words or, hell, telling her she had no business being naked on anyone’s billboard, he told her she could stand to lose a few pounds.

I was furious!  And I felt so sorry for her!  Khloe might be a bigger girl than her sisters, but she is by no means a big girl!  She is a regular sized girl and I would love to be her size.

But that’s hollywood for you.  I mean what else would you expect from a former Olympic athlete who now looks like he has been mummified.  He’s got his own issues with his appearance.

Do you watch the Kardashians?  Who is your favorite character?

I’m organzing an event for a local charity.  The purpose is for us to interact with patients and their families by playing games.

I am planning to do a large scale BINGO game that will engage a larger group.

What are some games that you would suggest for smaller groups of 2-4 people?

I like UNO, Scrabble and Password.

As much as I love this song, please don’t ever dedicate it to me.  That would be weird.

Thank you.

wolverine

Sunday I decided to take myself to a movie.  It was a tossup between the new Hugh Jackman movie and the new Matthew Mc(I don’t feel like looking up the spelling of his name)ay movie.  All of my FB friends were raving about Wolverine so I decided to go for that.

Don’t worry I won’t be discussing any of the plot lines or outcomes of this movie.

Maaaaaaannnnn, if somebody would have told me that I was going to get to see a nekkid Wolverine my decision would have been a lot easier.  That.Man.Is.Fine!

Oh yeah, and I enjoyed the movie too.

Did you see it?
