Weekend in Review July 13, 2009

I had a pretty good weekend. Friday was the Rehab celebration. Afterwards a few of us broke off and hit the streets. We made several stops around the city and ended up at a cigar bar where I smoked a girly cigar. I had a great time and I showered and brushed my teeth when I got home, but when I woke up I felt like a small animal had crawled into my mouth and DIED. I will never understand smoking. I know a few of you do it and I am hoping you are planning on stopping. That shit really is disgusting.

But I digress.
Saturday I finally went to see The Hangover. It was funny, but super vulgar. Funny, extremely ridiculous and super vulgar. I stopped at Tar-jay for bottled water, candy and some of their fresh popped popcorn. I got all of that for under $4. I shall never buy popcorn at the movies again. For those of you that have never had the Tar-jay popcorn, you are really missing out. And it’s on a buck!
I spent the afternoon at the pool and the evening on my couch.

Sunday I went to church and then rinsed and repeated my Saturday. Pool in the afternoon and the couch the rest of the day.
My kinda weekend!
How was yours?

Today I got up fairly early to head to the Anytown Foruth of July Parade. My grandmother, aunts and little cousin were going, and I wanted to have a little taste of Americana too. The last time I actually attended a parade was about twenty years ago when I was actually IN the parade. That’s right, for one year, I was an Anytownette.
I remember donning my little black skirt, white polo, pom-pons and my “white girls”. For those of you who do not know what “white girls” are, they are the plain white canvas shoes. Keds is known for making them, but we always purchased ours for $7 at wally world. Ironically, I was the only Black girl on the team, and it was my white counterparts that affectioned named the sneakers after themselves.
The parade started at 10am, but because Anytown is so small, my grandmother and I didn’t leave the house untl about 9:50. We parked at the local library walked two blocks to the start of the parade.

Every Anytown has a Main Street
As far as parades go, this one was highly entertaining. Not because of the spectacular floats, clowns and acrobats. But because the parade featured a bunch of old ladies sitting on the back of a flatbad with stoic looks on their faces, a Bengals firetruck and a trio of waste management trucks. WTF?!?!?
Here are a few of the more laughable moments from the parade:

Bengals Fire Truck

Smile, wave, it's a parade!

I think this was supposed to be a highlight of the day.

Waste Management represent!

Roxie enjoyed her first parade.

I probably should have covered this yesterday, as I’m sure a lot of you are out today.
It’s a three-day weekend for most of us!
Tonight I am attending an event in the city. I’m looking forward to putting on a pretty dress on going to hear some live music. In the morning, Roxie and I head to Anytown for a couple of days. I can’t wait to see my mommy and grandma and DO NOTHING for two whole days.
We’ll barbecue and relax all weekend. And we’ll have a birthday pawty for Roxie.
Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?
Safety’s Day June 21, 2009

Saturday evening, a handful of Safety’s closest friends and family got together to celebrate her latest accomplishment. She recently obtained her Master’s Degree (with Distinction I might add). Sister Safety and Mister Safety organized a fun gathering at a local thai restaurant. The restaurant is one of my favorites, and 7 minutes from my home, so I was really looking forward to it.

There's no place like home!
Upon seeing me, the Intern commented that I looked like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. I would *smh* at him, but he was kinda right. A modern day, chocolate Dorothy in the South. Instead of being swept away in a tornado, I was being suffocated by the heat. It’s hot outside dammit!
But I digress.

We had a fabulous time. The food was good and the conversation was great. Safety was totally surprised and was thankful for everyone coming out to show her love. I was happy to see the Keyaluses. Only 11 more weeks until the baby arrives! And of course I enjoyed quality time with the Intern, even though he doesn’t love me as much as I love him.
Today is the actual graduation day for Safety. She bestowed a little gift on us by telling us we totally didn’t have to come to the ceremony. Now I love Safety like we are blood-related, but when she told me I didn’t have to drive the hour in the hot sun AND attend a three-hour ceremony I almost jumped for joy.
Congratualtions, Safety! I see big things in your future!
I love you!
Saturday in the A June 15, 2009

Maaaaaaannnnn, I LOVE Atlanta! I do. I really do. There is so much to do here, the weather is great and the people are awesome.
This weekend was a typical Saturday in the A- lots to do.

Saturday morning, I met a few of my favorite ladies for the new exhibit at the Civic Center called America I Am. It is a travelling exhibit that chronicles the lives of American blacks from slavery to present day. There are plenty of artifacts, replicas and the like. It was very good and I highly recommend it. It’s great for families both young and old. The ticket prices aren’t steep and there is plenty to see.

After the exhibit the beauties and I headed to Gladys and Ron’s Chicken and Waffles. I had been craving it ever since I was homebound. Those commercials were talking to me and Saturday I got to satisfy that craving.
I left the exhibit and went on a coffee date with…a white guy! The irony of spending two hours studying Black oppression and then spending two hours with the whitest nicest white guy is worthy of its own blog post. In short, he was super nice and I would have probably gone out with him again had I not met my new guy a few hours later.
Saturday night, I decided to attend an event with CaliSlim that I had previously shunned. It felt good getting dressed up and, well, you all know how the evening turned out, but the real story is CaliSlim.

When I saw her my mouth hit the ground. I have never seen her look so positively lovely. She had on the cutest dress that showed off her Top Model figure. She had on Cute shoes and the perfect jewelry. When I tell you that everyone was checking her out I am not at all exaggerating. The girl was doing the damn thing!

I spent the evening being her wingman and personal security. Luckily, she knew just about everyone there so I also spent a lot of time shaking hands and meeting people. In the end, I had a really good time and I’m glad I made the decision to go.
Saturdays in the A are full of fun and social activities. I hope Saturdays in your city are equally as fun.
How was you Saturday?

I had a pretty good weekend. Well, I always have a good weekend. Even if I sit on my couch I am perfectly content!
Friday I got down in the kitchen. I made these chicken enchiladas. They were easy to make and yummy! They also make a lot, so I’ve eaten one every single day and will still be throwing away a lot.

Ole!
Saturday I took the puppy to the vet for her shots. I learned I was a bad mother. She had gunk in her ears and poop on her booty. They probably thought she was a stray that I found, and not a pampered house pooch.
Saturday evening I met the girls for a day party in midtown. It was weird being at the club in the middle of the day, especially since I am on likker restriction. But it was good seeing my girls in spite of the down-low frat boys walking around thinking they are prettier than me. The best part: no one brought their camera so I can totally wear that outfit again!
I left there and headed to Dunwoody for a date. Oh, but you’ll have to check back at 10am for my latest misadventure in dating!
Sunday I went to church and took Roxie to get groomed. I love her so much more when she is freshly bathed and cut. It’s a wonder I don’t do it every month. I seriously can’t stop hugging and petting her!

So fresh and so clean
I spent the rest of the day chilling. I baked cookies, but they didn’t turn out right, so I won’t be mailing any out. I know what I did wrong, so I’ll give it another go next weekend.
How was your weekend?
Trying Too Hard May 26, 2009

Saturday I went to a friend’s house for a gathering of individuals for cocktails and conversations. The objective was to have a “battle of the sexes” conversation. Honestly, those types of gatherings typically bore me because they are always the same. And once you’ve been to one sex, love and relationship discussion, you’ve been to them all. But, I had no other plans and wanted to see some of my friends that clown me for falling off the face of the earth so I made my way to the other side of I-20.
I arrived at the house and as I was making my way to the kitchen I heard the distinct sound of skins slappin. I looked in the living room and there on the giant flat screen was p0rn. I looked over at two girls I did not know and asked why they were watching p0rn. They immediately went into atttitude mode talking about “what’s the problem? are you offended?” They also boasted how they hadn’t seen Big Booty Girls 5 and they wanted to see the “end scene”.
I looked over at another girl and gave a huge eyeroll. It was easy to see what was going on with these girls. You see, I am willing to bet cold hard cash that these girls aren’t really into p0rn. But they want to seem cool and what they think is appealing, so they openly watch porn and talk about “end scene” shots. It’s sad really. Doing all of that to get attention. They were also overly excited about the game that is on. One kept touting how she was gonna have to leave if we didn’t have the game on, knowing good and damn well she wasn’t going anywhere. If she was hardcore into the game like that, she would have been at home or at a sportsbar watching it.
The evening flowed pretty much as I expected it too. I made a few comments here and there, but I otherwise didn’t have much to say. The Trying Too Hard duo, of course, made the most outlandish comments when the topic turned to sex. Whenever I made an opposing comment they immediately were challenging me. I didn’t mind, because the more they spoke the more ridiculous they sounded. One girl actually tried to argue that every restaurant serves salad with their entree. I hollered when someone responded, “yeah, at the Olive Garden.”
If it hadn’t been for some friends being there, I surely would have left a lot earlier. Thankfully they were there and we were able to make fun of the Duo on the sly. Before I knew it, it was late and I had to make my way back to the other side of the universe. As I was leaving the host made a comment about me being so conservative. I told him I was not at all conservative. I was, however, a lady and don’t feel the need to try so hard.
Have you ever met women who try to hard to get a man’s attention when in the company of a lot of people? Do you think they are trying too hard or is this how they really are? How do you handle them?
Thing You See in Park May 21, 2009

Yesterday Roxie and I went for a nice long walk at the park. While there I saw a few things that gave me pause…
A woman wearing a long-sleeved, button down shirt and long jeans. She only had one leg and was on an electric scooter.
Pause for a moment to get that picture in your head.
So one-leg Sally (Lord forgive me) kept zooming past me on her scooter. Taunting me. Here she was with one leg, and there I was with two (big) legs, and she was literally going in circles around me.
______________
Two skinny little Beckys in tank tops and short shorts with perfectly round bellies with babies in them.
Bitches.
______________
A girl walking about twenty feet ahead of me. Except I was on the path and she was off to the side in the woods. I watched her walking along in disbelief. She was wearing short red shorts and a yellow tank top. She had super pale skin and wore her long brown hair in a ponytail and had a goofy smile on her face. As I watched her disappearing in and out of the woods I could not help but thinking she was gonna be the victim of a serious crime. I chuckled at the thought of me giving a statement to the police. I could totally picture it. She looked like the poster child for victims of violent crimes. Like a character on CSI. I wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a camera crew following her.

Shirtless men in running shorts.
I love warm weather!

Safety outdid herself last night, ya’ll. She managed, with help from family and friends, to pull off a surprise party for her husband. And it was a stone cold groove!

The Winning Dress
Mr. Safety loves gambling, so a casino-themed party was the perfect idea. He thought he was heading to a banquet for his wife’s company. He thought she was getting an award. You should have seen his face when he opened the door and we all yelled surprise! His best friends and family came from out of town to surprise him. It was a blast! There were gaming tables with dealers, great food, and even a super sexy cocktail waitress. Hey Soulcialite! The food was yummy, but the cake was divine!

Delicioso!
The music was great thanks to DJ Babsalonia on the ones and twos. I was in charge of the music and couldn’t have been happier. You know how much I love music, so I spent many nights downloading the perfect party music. Of course I was sure to include the birthday boys favorites!
The crew looked positively lovely last night. We were a bevy of crayola-inspired beauties. There is nothing better than getting dressed up and partying with your besties!
As you can see, my hair turned out okay. It was super dorky after I left the salon, but I went home and worked it out with the flat iron and some hair serum. It still looked like I was set to host the evening news, but I was happy to have a different look for a change.

And now to Wendy Storm for the weather!
Intern was there looking dapper as usual, and even the Keyaluses came to celebrate with us. Momma Keyalus looked lovely!

Momma and Daddy Keyalus
We partied strong until about midnight and then we headed to the Safety’s for a little after-party. Tonight the festivities continue with an evening barbecue. Good times!
The Reader May 14, 2009

Those of you that know me can attest that nothing on this earth makes me happier than the sight of little brown faces looking up at me with excitement. Truly, nothing makes me happier. So today’s outing was just what the doctor ordered to bring me out of my funk.
Each month I volunteer at a local elementary school as a reader. I go in and read 3 or 4 books to K-2 students. This morning I was assigned to a kindergarten class. I was surprised that there were so many boys in the class. I expected them to be fidgeting and talking the entire time, but they were very well-behaved. They listened intently, laughed when appropriate and did a wonderful job of answering questions after I finished reading.
After I read three books I bid them farewell and they waved goodbye with a hearty “bye Miss Babs!” Definitely the pick-me-up I needed!
Do you volunteer your time?
