Back when I had relaxed hair, I relied on very few products for my African-American hair. I can remember going to Sally’s or some other beauty supply store and choosing from the small selection they had. When Pantene Pro-V started producing a line that was made for African-American women I was thrilled. Finally I didn’t have to go out of my way to buy hair care products for my hair! From that moment on, my shower always contained those little brown bottles.
Once I began to transition to natural hair (later becoming fully natural) I stopped buying the line. I’m not sure why, other than to say I got caught up in the swirl of the natural hair movement and becoming a product junkie. It happens to the best of us!
When I heard that Pantene Pro-V had revamped their African-American product line and now had two separate lines devoted separately to Relaxed and Natural hair I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait to try out what had once worked so well on my completely transformed tresses.
The Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural line of products is available to natural hair beauties everywhere. They have a clarifying shampoo, deep conditioner, co-washing conditioner, styling custard and a shine serum.
The first time I tried the products I opted for the shampoo and conditioner. I had been in search of a good clarifying shampoo to remove all the build-up of conditioner and styling products. This clarifying shampoo did the trick. The creamy concoction built up a nice lather and rinsed away with ease. I really felt my hair was clean, not dried out, when finished rinsing. The smell was fresh and clean, but not at all strong, just like I remember Pantene to be.
I followed up with the Deep Conditioner. At first I thought it was a little thin for a conditioner, but I was able to detangle my hair with ease. The product had great slip and also smelled great.
When I stepped out of the shower my hair looked great. My natural curls were evident and felt moisturized.
I decided to try the Defining Curls Syling Custard to see how it would hold and define my curls. The first day I used it I thought my hair looked great. It was a long day for me out and about and in the sun and wind. My curls held up all day and I loved the volume I got. The bigger the better, I say.
Midway through the day I applied the Shine Serum and loved how it was light yet still refreshed my hair. I’m no stranger to serums and was happy to see that the Pantene Pro-V version worked great.
The only problem with the curl custard is that is made my hair a little hard. I decided to try the product again using less and noticed that while it wasn’t nearly as hard as the day before, it also didn’t have as much hold or volume as the day before. I was really hoping to find that combination of awesomely defined and soft curls.
The last item of the line that I tried was the Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner. I co-wash with just conditioner 6 days of the week, so finding a product that was geared towards that was really exciting to me. I really like the Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner. Like the deep conditioner, it smells great and has great slip. However, given the price difference between the two products, I am not sure why I would choose the more expensive product over the other when they both work great.
Overall, I am thrilled to try the Truly Natural line from Pantene Pro-V. It is so encouraging that “mainstream” hair care companies are paying attention to the needs of it’s women and creating lines that focus on us. I will definitely be purchasing the clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner again.
